New Hot Water Installations

If you need a new hot water system installed, or your existing hot water system needs replacing, Pipe Dream Plumbing can provide expert advice and installation for a wide variety of hot water systems.

When selecting a new hot water system there are two main choices: electric, or gas.

Electric Hot Water Systems

Electric hot water systems heat water inside an insulated tank using an electric element. The hot water is heated to a temperature controlled by a thermostat and stored in the tank ready for use.

Gas Hot Water Systems

Gas hot water systems run off gas that is either piped to your house, or delivered in large bottles that sit outside your house.

One of the main benefits of a gas hot water system is that it is cheaper to run than electricity per unit.

It is generally more cost efficient to install a gas hot water system when gas is also being used for other purposes in your house, for example cooking.

Solar Hot Water Systems

A good solar hot water system can cut your water heating bill by up to 70%.

If you’re not ready to go full solar yet – you can still install a solar ready hot water cylinder but run it as an electric hot water cylinder until you’re ready to connect it to solar panels, future-proofing your system.

The two main types of solar heating are direct and indirect.

In a direct system water goes through solar collectors and into the hot water cylinder.

An indirect system uses heat transfer fluid, pumping it through the collectors and then transferring the heat from the fluid to the water.

Pipe Dream Plumbing can advise you on which type of solar heating will be suitable for your home and budget.

Leaking Hot Water Cylinder

A leaking hot water cylinder can cause many problems:

  • waste water,
  • use more electricity unnecessarily, costing you money,
  • cause water damage to your floor and anything underneath the cylinder.

Hot Water System Maintenance

There are several things the average person can do to make sure their hot water system runs effectively and reliably.

Check Your Hot Water Cylinder For Leaks

If you have a hot water cylinder, check around the cylinder, the tray, the pipes and fittings, for signs any leaks.

To check for leaking nuts, fittings or valves, use a kitchen paper towel and work your way around each fitting. Wipe the fitting dry and then check to see if any water weeps from the fitting.

If you find a leaky nut, you may be able to tighten it up yourself and save yourself money.

Temperature Pressure Relief Valve

If you have a mains pressure hot water cylinder check for a valve near the top of the cylinder. This is called a Temperature Pressure Relief (TPR) valve.

Pulling the TPR valve seasonally (i.e. when you do a spring clean) will help keep the spring supple.
